Short portrait

The section provides a forum for discussions on the sociology of medicine and health within the framework of sociology and in exchange with the neighboring disciplines of medicine, psychology and education. Also addressed are the research areas united under the umbrella term "public health" such as health economics, health systems research and social epidemiology. The Section promotes cross-border dialogue with other sociological associations in the field of medicine. To this end, Section conferences are held regularly to address current and urgent problems in the sociology of medicine and health, thus contributing to a sociological foundation of the public health debate. In exchange with the related disciplines of health sciences, medical and health sociology emphasizes a genuine sociological contribution. This is to be achieved by:

  1. the reference to sociological theories to explain health-related social phenomena,
  2. the application of qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research according to the latest standards,
  3. the choice of research questions that are considered to be socially relevant, and
  4. a critical and reflective attitude, which questions the own approach as well as the use and reception of the research results in practice and in the professional public.
