After the successful second edition of safeND in September 2023, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) has scheduled the third edition of the ›Interdisciplinary research symposium on the safety of nuclear disposal practices - safeND‹ for the late summer of 2025 – from 17 to 19 September – in Berlin.
The symposium will consist of regular sessions for oral and poster presentations as well as workshops and open discussion groups. The symposium will take place in-person in Berlin (venue yet to be determined). The calls for session suggestions and contributions will follow in due time.

What: Intra- and interdisciplinary discussions about current research results and projects related to the safety of nuclear waste management, including the following topics:
- Decommissioning of nuclear facilities
- Interim storage, conditioning and transport of radioactive waste
- Disposing of high-level and well as low- and medium-level radioactive waste
- Site selection for deep geological repositories
- Alternative disposal methods
- Participation and communication processes for projects involving nuclear safety and disposal
- Safety culture related to nuclear disposal
- Socio-technical aspects of nuclear disposal (including historical, economic and legal analyses)
- Nuclear waste management related to alternative reactor designs
- Safeguards and non-proliferation in nuclear waste disposal
