Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite submissions for the VSJF Section "Sociology & Social Anthropology", which will be held on Saturday, 14 November 2026, at the University of Vienna.
Extended Hybrid Workshop
This year›s section meeting will be organized as an extended hybrid workshop, offering more time than usual for presentations, discussion, and networking. The workshop provides an excellent opportunity to present ongoing research, receive detailed feedback, and engage in in-depth exchange with colleagues working on Japan-related social science research.
Participation is possible both on site in Vienna and online. English will serve as the working language of the workshop.
About the Section
The Sociology & Social Anthropology section is an interdisciplinary forum for discussing current research on Japan from sociological, social anthropological, and related social science perspectives.
We welcome presentations on:
- ongoing research projects
- doctoral and postdoctoral research
- completed studies
- work in progress
The workshop is intended as a constructive forum for discussing theoretical approaches, methodological questions, empirical findings, and future research directions.
While we particularly encourage submissions from early-career researchers—including advanced MA-level, doctoral researchers, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty—we also warmly welcome contributions from established scholars.
Travel Support
To encourage participation, travel grants are available for presenting early-career researchers attending in person. This year‹s financial support is more generous than in previous years.
Researchers who are unable to travel to Vienna are warmly invited to participate online.
Submission Guidelines
- Presentation: 20–30 minutes
- Abstract: Maximum 500 words
- Submission deadline: 15 September 2026
- Submission email: sociology[at]vsjf.net
- Please indicate whether you plan to participate in person or online.
Additional Information
The workshop will take place on the same weekend as the Student Conference of European Japanese Studies (SCEJ), also hosted at the University of Vienna. While the two events are organized independently, participants interested in mentoring, networking, or attending student presentations may wish to take advantage of both events.
We look forward to receiving your submissions and to welcoming you to Vienna.
With best regards,
Carola Hommerich & Steve R. Entrich
